N. Shore inventor promotes new alcohol-free hairspray ‘“*WARNING HAIRSPRAY can be haz- ardous to your health.’’ By Layne Christensen Fashion Reporter Sound a little far-fetched? Not according to a North Vancouver entrepreneur and inventor of a new alcohol-free hairspray. Brian Curelle says the benefits of his product, launched last August under the Curelle name, are twofold: friendlier on the en- vironment, with minimal packag- ing and no toxic solvents; and healthier on the hair and scalp. The alcohol found in most hairsprays is actually ethanol, a component of gasoline in Canada, and a toxin that ‘‘fuels autos in Brazil,’ says the 40-year-old in- ventor. Alcohol is also reported to be the main air pollutant in pump and aerosol sprays, and a primary contributor to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which react with sunlight to produce smog, global warming and acid rain. “Alcohol-based sprays emit. as many VOCs in the U.S.A. and Canada as about 200 oil refineries (and) are next only to autos and paints in consumer VOC emis- sions,’? states the material that accompanies every 300-millilitre recyclable container of Curelle hairspray. It's a claim that at least one of Curelle’s competitors finds hard to believe. “Its like saying fair color creates cancer,’’ says Marian McNair, regional manager for Western Canada for Redken, which came out with a line of low-VOC products after Califor- nia introduced legislation to limit the alcohol content in styling aids. But Curelle stands by his claims, backing them up with the results of independent research performed in the U.S. by Cornell a NEWS photo Mike Wakeflald NORTH SHORE inventor Brian Curelle is making waves in the hairdressing community with his claim that the alcohol found in most hairsprays is hard on the environment and your health. Over 40 North Shore salons, including Park Royal's Applause, pictured here, now stock Curelle’s new alcohol-free hairspray. University, CBS news, the Amer- ican Lung Association and the Consumer Product Safety Com-- mission, to name a few. What these results show is that exposure to the alcohol used in hairsprays, which typically makes up 80% of a pump’s content and 70% of an aerosol’s, can also lead to health problems ranging from split ends and dry scalp to eVou're Invited ~~~ shion wear | accessorie Gh randiaccessoresy 152 E. 14TH ST., NORTH VAN 988-8334 | allergies and respiratory illness such as asthma, says Curelle. A: Bridal gowns are a big investment. @ Selected and cared for properly, your gown can be used by several generations. Wedding gowns are often decorated with beads, lace, and other trim. This may cause problems dur- ing cleaning, Many trims are glued rather than sewn to the surface of the fabric. Sometimes the trim will start to curl and pull away at the edges during wear. Many adhesives are extremely soluble in dryclean- ing solvent and drycleaning will cause a complete loss and removal of trim. After the wedding the gown should be cléaned within a few days or weeks. Unattended, spilled champagne or punch can leave invisible stains that dasken in time The longer these stains or soils are left in the gown, the greater the probability of their becoming permanently set. The professional drycleaner offers careful clean- ing of wedding gowns, but it takes cooperation bet- ween the customer and the cleaner.
