Friday, April 9, 1999 — North Shore News — 17 Gi ans fi : LE parod Skew Cookie'’s Fortune. Directed by Robert Altman. Starring Glenn Close, Julianne Moore, Charles S. Dutton and Liv Tyler. Opens today at the Park Theatre. Julie Crawford Filin Reviews WHETHER or not you enjoy Cookie’s Fortune depends on how you feel about director Robert Altman. Altman purists hunyering for a bitingly witty film in the same vein as The Player and Short Cuts will find Cookie’s Fortune hard to swallow, but those looking for something lighter will find the film sweet and palatable. The tifm takes place in the South, which is parodied sometimes subtly, sometimes ruthless- ty by Altman. Holly Springs i is the type of town where a man’s bonour is determined by whether or not he fishes, and a woman’s hon- our is still her greatest possession. “Cookie” Orcutt (Patricia Neal) is one of the grand old dames of the town, but she flaunts such convention, much to the chagrin of her pious niece Camille (Glenn Clo:e), the town’s self appointed cultural esthete. Camille is director of the church production of Salome (billed as written by Oscar Wilde and Camille herself) starring Camille’s meek @ CN IMAX Sat. and Sun. 201-999 Canada Place (682- 4629) Extreme — 1:15, 3:45, 6:45, 9 p.m. with 5:45 p.m. es St ROBERT Altman direct- ing Cookie’s Fortune. T-Rex:BAck to the Cretaceous — Noon, 2:30, 7:45 with 4:45 p.m. Sat. and utie sister Cora Qufianne Moore i. When the wo pay a visit to Aunt Cookie and discover her dead, Camille hastily cats the suicide note and inserices Cora to tell ne one, because “suicide is a disgrace.” The plan to make the suicide took fike a robbery /murder works all too well, and Willis (Charles §. Dutton), Cookic’s beloved companion and odd- job man, is charged with the crime. Other than Willis che only family member Covkie could abide was her great-nicce Enya (Liv Tyler). Emma is totally unlike her mother Cora, and shares Willis’ pas- sion for Wild Turkey and a passion of her own for rookie deputy Jason (Chris O°Donnell). No one really believes that Willis killed Cookie. The search tor the truth yields a whole mess of family secrets, paternity revelations, hidden passions, and the truth about Cookie’s fortune. All the performances are excellent. Supporting players include Lyle Lovett, Ned Bearry, Donald Moffat, Courtney B. Vanee and blues musicians Rutus Thomas and Ruby Wilson. No actor is pushed beyond his or her abilities so they all look at case in their roles. There’s nothing complicated about Anne Rapp’s sercenplay but energetic performances by a stellar ensemble cast, coupled with a few good plot twists, makes Cookie’s Fortune an enjoyable two hours. ‘ysteries of Egypt — 10 p.m. @ Fifth Avenue Cinemas See more Page 3
