'- The win capped an outstanding season for the team, which is coached by Steve Garland, Gordie Simpson and John Garland. Paced by the talented feet of striker J.R. Payne, the Dukes won four straight games following an opening round scoreless tie against Brocklehurst. The Dukes outscored their com- petition 10-1 in their charge to the championship trophy. Payne, celebrating her 17th birthday during the tournament’s semi-final last Friday, scored two goals in Windsor’s 3-1 semi-final victory over Langley, and scored the winning goal of the final. The Grade 11 student was named the B.C. Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Pelleirn was named the Outstanding Goalkeeper of the tournament and was a second team all-star, Grade 9 left winger Laura Turner, who scored two goals in the Duke’s 5-0 win over L.V. Rogers, was named to the first all- star team. Heroics came into play in a big way during the L.V. Rogers match. Grade 1} striker Jen Walker completed a hat-trick for the Dukes, but in the process of scor- ing her third goal broke her ankle. Walker sat on the sidelines for the rest of the tournament. Another hero for the Dukes was captain and centre midfielder Leanne Hancheroff who scored the game winning goal in a 1-0 decision over Vancouver's Little Flower Academy to put the North Shore team into the semi-finals. Spartans 2nd in B.C. THE SENTINEL Spartans made it all the way to the finals of the senior girls’ triple-A provincial high school championships before being stopped by a powerful Notre Dame squad. The Spartans finished a respectable second in B.C. follaw- ing their 5-0 loss to the Vancouver private school, Sentinel advanced to the final Dee eee Cee as AAR aan with a 1-0 shootout victory over Richmond. : The Argyle Pipers, meanwhile. defeated North Delta 2-1 to lock- up fifth-place in the province.
