By Surj Rattan News Reporter But the local police detachment was not so lucky when it came in for attack by a North Vancouver District councillor during a similar hearing held in Burnaby on Sun- day, May 2. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Wallace Oppal is travelling the province for a one-man commis- sion of inquiry into policing in B.C. Oppal_ is collecting comments from the public about their local police forces. North Vancouver District Coun. Joan Gadsby told Oppa! about a June 28, 1989 motor vehicle acci- dent involving her daughter and a North Vancouver RCMP constab- le. Gadsby accused the RCMP of a “coverup’’ and claims she has continually been stone-walled by polive and government officials over the accident - Gadsby said her daughter’s car was hit by a police cruiser driven by RCMP Const. Marcus Boland. The officer was enroute to another accident. Gadsby told Oppa! that Boland was ‘‘clearly in NVD COUN. Joan Gadsby contravention’’ of the Motor Vehicle Act ‘‘by not having his siren on and by speeding, thereby causing the accident." “He should have been charged by the court. accordingly and ac- cepted his responsibility for the accident. It’s as simple as that,”’ said Gadsby, who sits on the North Vancouver police fiaison committee. She called on Oppal to make recommendations to not allow the RCMP to investigate themselves. She also pressed for tightened regulations covering the use of emergency vehicles by the RCMP. But the North Vancouver RCMP were praised by North Vancouver District Mayor Murray Dykeman and North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks when Oppal brought his commission of inquiry to North Vancouver.
