&6t East Windsor Rd., North Vancouver, B.C., built 1927. Stanmore Designed by architect Harry Blackadder in 1927 AFTER SKETCHING this home from the front, I was “encouraged to. take a look at it from the rear yard and gardens. Having done so I couldn’t resist ‘doing it again from the view seen above, . { did this drawing from a park ‘bench nestled on the edge of a sunken lawn surrounded by sculptured flower beds. This elegant home sits on a double lot and has wonderful gardens. The heritage inventory shows a photograph taken in 1948 of a garden party held at St. Martins Church in these gardens. The present owners still hold NORTH SHORE HERITAGE by Dorothy Foster garden parties at their home. “Stanmore”? was designed by Harry Blackadder, an architect well known in’ North Vancouver -for his home designs at this time. It was built in 1927 at a cost of $11,500, and Tudor, Revival ele- ments are featured in its construc- tion. Half-timbering,. cross-.eaded casements and tall stone chimneys are among the features. This home was built for Hugh Archibald Stevenson who was brought to Canada by the federal government to organize the ship- ment of grain throughout the country, including the placement of grain elevators and facilities, which helped to open up Van- couver as a major port on the West Coast. Stevenson chose to name this home after a hill named Stanmore near his home in Scotland. Stanmore has been lovingly cared for by its present owners, the Deans. . It boasts four fireplaces, a fine dark wood interior, and a unique ceiling moulding in both the living room and the dining room, detail- ing B.C.’s provincial flower, the native Dogwood. Plantsman discusses garden structure THE DIRECTOR of Wave Hil! Garden in New’ York for 25 years, Marco Polo Stufano will lecture at VanDusen Gardens on Monday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. in the Flora! Hall. _ Tickets must be purchased in advance at $12 for non-members ‘and $8 for members. Wave Hill is renowned for audacious plant combinations. Stufano, whe is widely recognized as a superb plantsman, has created a series of intimate, small-scale gardens amid a 19th century gardenesque landscape. The _hell-fire-and-brimstone Red Garden, for instance, is a standout among the eight beds in the 70’x 90’ cottage-style Flower Garden, where pastels predominate against silver foliage foils. The danger-sign oranges and Nancy Regan reds such as Crocosmia ‘‘Lucifer’’ and Hemerocallis ‘‘Sparks’' shout for attention. Stufano will lecture on ‘‘Bones in the Garden,”’ or what makes a good garden work. He believes that gardens are a series of pic- tures and spaces; at best, they are art; and as with ail art, there is an underlying structure (the bones) which holds the creation together. Garden structure endures through the seasons even though floral displays do not. VanDusen Gardens is located at 525! Oak St., corner of Oak Street and 37th Avenue in Van- couver.
