N SEARCH of life on Lonsdale after 6 p.m., we head [ north of 13th Street. The main pulse in these 4 parts is, of course, Jack Lonsdale’s pub, wherein neighborly mid- Lonsdale folk can take in a ball game on the suspended color TVs, toss some darts, or simply shoot the breeze over a schooner of chilled ale. But other signs of life are also beginning to show. How about a cappuccino? Yes, in North Vancouver, Mr. Cynic. Not one, but two cappuccino bars are now in fack’s vicinity. Bean There at 1336 Lonsdale and Perfect Blends Cafe, #101-1433 Lonsdale, just across the small plaza from Jack's itself. Bean There apparently believes in bean there only in the daytime, because it was locked up tight by 7 p.m. ona recent Friday night, which was most disappointing. Late word has it, however, that , Bean There should be open until 10 p.m. soon, if not right now. With closing time at 10 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on Fridays _ and Saturdays, Perfect Blends is _ already servicing the late-night beatnik crowd for which heavy was origina lesign Pine inne combined with later opening hours at Bean There, . the concept may catch on, and human beings might be found on Lonsdale after 10 p.m. But of course Table Hopping was after more than just a brisk watk up Lonsdale and a beak full ~ of ground cafe noir. The crew was after a feed. We set out for O'Zest, we ended up at some place called the Orange Club Cafe. Lost? No, hungry reader, just another day i in the local restaurant u trade, where things change. Often. The Orange Club opened in the " former O'Zest locale in mid-May. It is a far less ambitious restau- rant than its predecessor, which opened in 1983 and successfully _setved a nouvelle French cuisine until inspiration began to peter out earlier this decade. The Orange Club tends more . towards the unembroidered, the uncomplicated and the plain and simple. Timothy Renshaw TABLE HOPPING You won’t be able to spend much there either. The only entree that costs more than $10 is New York Steak and Breaded Prawns for $12.95. The rest of the Club’s selection ranges from $5.95 for a house special Hot Croissant with Shrimp Filling ali the way up to $9.95 fora New York Steak with mushroom . sauce. You get potatoes and veg with that too. Club diners won't need to worry much about wading through a fancy wine list either. You have a » choice of Red Mission Hill Burgundy or White Mission Hill Chablis ($14 for the bottle; $9.20 for the half litre; $3.45 for the glass). If you don’t like it, push off. Or order a tall-necked Labatt Dry ($2.95). The Dry goes down nicely with a Prawn and Carrot Pancake ~ ($4.95) from the Club’s starter selection. Other starters include Caesar Salad ($2.50, or $4.50 if you add shrimp), Seafood Salad ($4.95, with shrimp, smoked salrnon and mango mousse) or Sauteed Mushrooms ($3.50). The carrot pancake comes in three pieces each topped with a thick fresh prawn and a slightly tart tomato sauce. It makes for an interesting open- ing. | followed with a Chicken Curry ($7.50) and pondered the rele- vance of oranges in the Orange Club scheme of things. The interior decor included bamboo wall hangings and high- backed rattan chairs suitable for ft was accompanied with a serv- ing of rice topped with shaved al- monds and mined with raisins. Also on the plate were deep-fried bananas, soft and | chewy, not greasy, and shredded deep-fried onions. The curry was a deep orange color. it featured thick chunks of chicken breast and bright orange carrots. Its sauce was spicy and fruit based. Orange? Now that you mention it, yes, a fragrant hint of orange. And a good curry bite. A Shrimp and Scallop Creole ($8.50) was also sampled. It, to0, was spicy, simple and refreshing. Not much ovange there, though. But dessert: Chocolate Mousse in a Crepe with Orange Sauce ($2.95); Cream Puff Fondue with Orange Yogurt Dip ($2.75): Floating Swan with Orange ene Croissant with Marmalade ($1.50). : extremely and in, of all places, mmid- Lonsdale. “WINE WINE WIN!
