NEWS BRIEFS NV store robbed VHE NORTH Vancouver RCMP are asking for public assistance to capiure a lone male who robbed Topsy Turvy Children’s Boutique, 152 East 14th St., North Vancouver of $100 on June 29. Police report ihe suspect walked into the store at ap- proximately 12:30 p.m. and told a store employee that he had a weapon inside his jacket. He then demauded all the money in the cash register and was given $100. The suspect is described as white, 173 cm tall, medium build, in his late 20s with blonde hair spiked on the top and shoulder-length in the back. He was last seen wearing a black jacket with the coilar zipped up... Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact Const. Pettit at the RCMP, 985-1311. Power outage BETWEEN 1,200 AND 1,400 North Vancouver resi- dences lost power Monday aight when a regulator failed ata B.C. Hydro sub-statioz at 400 Fourth St. B.C. Hydro spokesman Verne Prior said the regulater, which controls the voltage flow in the sub-siation, shorted out. The malfunction caused the power outage, _ which lasted from 5:55 p.m. to 7:10 p.m. He added that customers were switched to anotiter circuit. The grea affected by the power outage was bounded by 2ist Steeet to the north, Fifth Street to the south, Bewicke Avenue to the west and §. Andrews Avenue to the east. Buses test requests A SIX-MONTH pilot project in.which B.C. Transit bus drivers will stop at non-designated places along routes at the request of passengers stavted June 26 on the Nerth Shore. The request-stop program is in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. with passengers required to telt bus drivers where they want to be tet off af least one bus stop ahead of the location. Bus drivers may refuse a request if they feel the re- quested stop is unsafe. All North Vancouver and West Vancouver bus routes are part of the request-stop program. The North Shore was selected for the pilot project because the original request for the new service came from North Vancouver City Council earlier this year. At that time, Ald. Stella Jo Dean voiced concerns about crimes against women who have to walk long distances to or from work at night. North Vancouver District Mayor Murray Dykeman, who is the North Shere representative on the Vancouver Regional Transit Commission, said the service was ex- panded to include both men and women. The ship’s hull was towed from Esquimalt to Surrey Fraser Docks in late May, where it received the superstructure . The vessel is expected to be handed over to the BCFC in spr- ing 1993 and will then be put into service on the Swartz Bay- Tsawwassen route in time for next yeac’s summer season. The completed ship, which can carry 2,100 passengers and 470 cars, will be 167.5 metres long and have a service speed of 19.3 knots. This represents a 54% increase in Passenger capacity and a 27% in- crease in vehicle capacity over ex- isting vessels travelling the route. The new S-class superferry is designed to be fuel efficient and incorporates a_ state-of-the-art propulsion system and com- puterized engine ‘‘health monitor- ing’’ system. It will also be a ‘‘green ship’’ due to built-in, environmentally- friendly systems. They include: @ a biclogical sewage treatment system in which effluent is steril- ized: @ a new and innovative garbage treatment system that includes an extensive recycling program; @ Power Smart lighting systems designed to reduce power con- sumption; @ advanced heating systems that utilize heat from engines to warm passenger and crew areas.
