36 - Sunday, December 15, 1991 -- North Shore News BUSINESS BRIEFS AWARD FINALIST A VANCOUVER architectural firm has placed as a finalist in the Awerd of Excellence 1991 Design Competition held by the Interior Design Institute of B.C. Mineo Tanaka Architect of the Colborne Architectural Group placed as a finalist in the Institue tional/Healih Care category for its BCIT Childcare Centre entry. North Vancouver resident Dalia Gottlieb-Tanaka, an associate of the company, said the BCIT Childcare Centre in Burnaby is a new facility for 25 children be- _tween the ages of three and five and will also act as a training cen- tre for both BCIT and Douglas College. ‘*We are pleased to see that the centre is considered a fine example for a daycare and is attracting at- tention from the child care service industry,’ said Gottlieb-Tanaka. **The daycare issue is an extremely important subject and, as parents ourselves with one child in a daycare centre, we are pleased to see the recent developments re- garding child care.” The project was initiated by the BCIT Student Association and was partially funded by GO B.C. “Due to the high calibre of en- tries in each category, the judging of this competition was a difficult task and all finalists should be ex- tremely proud of their achieve- ment,'’ said Allan Galajda, design awards chairman. The winners will be announced on Feb. 8, 1992. BUSINESS WRITING CAPILANO COLLEGE will of- fer a business writing course aim- ed at producing effective reports, memorandums and letters, which can be crucial to success in to- day’s information economy. Communications 152) (CMNS 152) will show students how to write well-organized and_ clearly written documents and save time by doing it. The course also offers students a chance to brush up on English skills with a lively, prac- tical review of style, grammar, spelling and punctuation. “The course is required for business-management career pro- grams,”’ said instructor Crawford Kilian. ‘‘So if you’re planning to enrol in a program later, you'll have the communications re- quirements already achieved.”’ He added that the course is also required for the CGA certificate. CMNS 152 covers such topics as effective business style, organiza- tion of reports, fetters, memos, correct English usage and the “nuts and bolts’? of spelling, grammar and punctuation. **Most people are better writers than they think,”’ said Kilian. “But if they can write more clear- ly and concisely, they can com- municate more effectively on the job.” The course takes place Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 and stu- dents can register during the first two weeks of January. For more information, call Kilian at 986- 1911, local 2585. TERMINAL EXPANSION THE VANCOUVER Port Corp. (VPC) has awarded North Van- couver-based Dilcon Constructors Ltd. a $5.8 million contract to improve and expand its Centerm container terminal. Plans call for Dilcon to build a 72-metre (235-foot) westward ex- tension of the Centerm dock. The extension project precedes the in- stallation of an additona! con- tainer crane, the fourth for Centerm, scheduled to be in operation in the early spring of 1993. VPC chief executive officer and port manager Capt. Norman Stark said the Centerm upgrade ‘‘will send another signal io our cus- tomers across the continent and around the world that we are committed to ongoing improve- ments to capacity and container handling efficiency in the Port of Vaneouver.”" The terminal upgrade will allow Centerm to service two post- Panamax sized vessels at the same time. The expansion project will also create two acres of storage space for containers. The total project, including the crane purchase and dock exten- sion, is valued in excess of $12 million. The dock extension project is expected to be complete in July 1992. To date, the port’s con- tainer tonnages are running 21% ahead of last year’s totals. a eg ka e ESTATE SILVER ® Set of 10 sterling service plates with side plates Always purchasing © Consignment welcome 1730 MARINE DR., WEST VANCOUVER 926-7710 10.50% SCVERNMENT BONDS 106% cai DAVID BLAIR -: 844-5709 We offer a NO-FEE RRSP -The Park Royal Shoppi Cenire has a new adi RICHARDSON GREEMSHIELDS $00 - 1066 West Hastings Street, Vancouver, Srtsh Columbia VEE 3X1 All rales are subject to change without notice. ion te i's list of quality 3 Different Retail Stores FOR SALE in prime location, good leases Buy one for as fittle as $50,000 BE YOUR OWN BOSS No Sunday or Evening Openings WEST VAN FURNITURE SALES LTD. 1582 MARINE DRIVE, WEST VANCOUVER INTERIORS & PATIO 1468 MARINE DRIVE, WEST VANCOUVER YOURS & OURS NEW & USED 1470 PEMBERTON, NORTH VANCOUVER For information please cal!
