Question: I read your article last week on Handydart services and would like to know how 1 can use the service for outings (to Vancouver? Since you need to book these rides in advance, what about trips where [ might not have time fo do this? | am an el- derly person who can walk short distances but I have trouble step- ping onte buses. Answer: Your tips to Van- couver may require some careful planning. North Shore Handydart vans make only one trip tc Van- couver per day. They leave she North Shore between 8 and 9 a.ra. and begin the return trip at about 11:15 a.m. You do, however, have a few options if you are interested in making tips at other times. You could book a Handydart tide to the SeaBus, obtain a FareSaver ticket from the driver, enter your ticket into the “ticket validator’’ machine at the SeaBus terminal, and ride the SeaBus to Vancouver (elevators available). You then could meet a pre- arranged Vancouver Handydart (430-2692) at the Waterfront stop which would take you to your destination. Or, you could board a city bus with a lift that is designed to assist handicapped people such as yourself. These buses are marked with the fetter ‘*L”’’ in the transit timetable, there are a_ limited number of them operating, and only certain bus stops are set up Sense of style wins over common sense From page 34 have a great phouiness, GENTLE READER ~— Those are interesting principles you have. As Miss Manners understands it, they require sabotaging your son’s wedding reception and publicly insulting his bride and her family — out of respect for your sense of style and an odd whim or two. Miss Manners refuses to recommend either of your solu- tions. If you are surly at the wedding reception, it will of course create a scandal. The inevitable assump- tion wil! be that you hate the bride. Of course, if you boycott the teception, the assumption will be that it is the bridegroom, your own son, who has done something so appalling that you cannot forgive him. In neither case could you expect. to have much of a relationship with the couple after the wedding. The wound you so righteously talk of inflicting would be a serious one. Miss Manners suggests you adopt your husband's solution. The parents of bridegrooms often laugh as they congratulate themselves on how superior their taste is to the other family’s. But the principled ones do this strictly in private. laugh over his Environmentalists StartHere for their use. Your third option would be to call a cub company that cuns lift equipped cars. To save on cab fares, B.C. Transit is offering a new coupon program this June. The ‘TaxiSaver’’ booklet will give you $40 in taxi vouchers for the price of $20, and many companies now have cars with lifts for people in wheelchairs. For more informa- tion on the vouchers, cali 264- 5000. The TaxiSaver program is probably your best bet for unplanned trips. The chances of booking a Handydart ride at the last minute are slim, due to very heavy scheduling. it may, howev- er, be worth a try to see if there are any cancellations. For evening outings, you must book at least one weck in advance. The number of the North Shore Handydart Dispatch office is 980-3691. If Handydart does not meet your transportation needs, Capilano Community Services operates a volunteer driver pro- gram mainly for North Shore trips. They ask people to request rides at least 48 hours in advance of their owing and their number is 988-7115, For Vancouver trips or connec- lions call Vancouver volunteer driver program at 872-2034. The June 2 edition of Help's at Hand incorrectly stated that Han- dydart passes can be purchased for $50, and that North Shore Handydart services are available on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, However, passes are not currently available, and the Saturday hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to midnight.
