As a result of his mother’s drug habits, he was left with a cleft palate, a severely disfigured head and the sarcastic nickname “Johnny Handsome.’’ Most of his life was spent scrounging a living in the shadowy world of crime, where his intelligence and loyalty were valued. During a robbery the shadows deepened when the only man who treated him like a brother is gunned down by their double- crossing partners, Rafe and Sunny (Lance Henrikson, Ellen Barkin). Johnny is the only one captured and sentenced to hard labor but he refuses to rat, not out of loyalty; he plans on balancing the scales of justice when he’s released. A savage attack lands him in hospital where he undergoes plastic surgery, speech therapy and a chance at a normal life — new job, nice girlfriend (Elizabeth McGovern), the whole nine yards. But can a new face change the man it masks? This is not a world of logic. Two operations to remove massive cranial tissue leave a scar above Mickey's nose the size of a shaving Teacher loves kids, dance From page 23 year he decided to open his own ballet school. In the beginning teaching was a means to an end, he says, but “What came to a surprise to me is how much | enjoyed teaching young children.” Walker began teaching Kinder- dance — dance for three and four-year-olds. Years later a friend asked him why he didn’t teach two-year-olds. Walker was unsure of how successful such a program would be, but one month into his first Tiny Tu-Tu's for Two class he was asking himself why he hadn't done it years ago. “(said this is silly. There are a lot of teachers who will put children into ballet slippers when they're too young. | started teaching the really young ones to protect them from injuries.”’ Walker emphasizes how impor- tant it is to keep children out of pointe shoes until the age of 10 to reduce the risk of damage to the muscles. The youngest of four children, Walker says he was well-groomed for teaching kids after babysitting his many neices and nephews. “I've always loved kids. It never dawned on me when I began teaching them that | was doing anything unusual.” Twelve years ago Walker sold his Edgemont Viliage studio and now teaches in Highland United Church in North Vancouver, in addition to freelancing at com- munity centres and day cares. His only philosophy on dance is: “Everyone can dance.” “We shouldn't compare ourselves to anyone else. You should put all the pluses in front of you and forget all the negatives. “| believe that you should think what you want to be. The problem we have is that we don’t think big enough.” Thanks to Walker countless little people have learned to think bi;, AND WATCH STREEP INSTEAD who were accused of murdering their infant daughter. Despite evi- dence supporting Lindy’s claim that a dingo was the culprit, they became the focus of a nationwide witch hunt. Gossip about their misunderstood religion ran ram- pant. But through all the ghastly innuendo, Lindy rarely betrayed her emotions in public and that unwillingness to play up to the jury carried a staggering cost. Superb acting (a given with Streep), sharp direction by Fred Shepisi and a great script makes this one of last year’s best. NORTH SHORE VIEWS West Van Odeon: Closed due to labor dispute. STAY HOME Sunny are about the two most unlikeably, bickering low-lifes to ooze out since Deliverance. Why are they together? Surely one would have killed the other by now. This film should have gone under the knife to remove the murky atmosphere and earpierc- ing soundtrack that director Walter Hill trowels on. Then again, surgeons can only do so much.
