OPEN LETTER TO PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS Recently a number of things have happened to make me con- cerned for our children in this community. To begin with, one evening my husband and I were at home when we were startled by a pounding on " our front door. By the time we got to the door, no one was there, so we went to the window to see who | might have come to the door and were amazed to see four to five young teenage boys shouting obscenities to ‘‘you in the win- dow.” One Friday night, I could not sleep and was getting a drink of water at the sink. In the front of our house J watched while a number of 14- to 15-year-olds smoked and drank beer under the street light. It-was well after | a.m. I played golf one Saturday with a friend,’ another grandmother, and we were paired up with two young men, one of whom swore and used foul language all around the course. That Saturday night, my hus- band and | were awakened in the early hours of the morning by yell- ing, and when we got up and look- ed out-the window, we saw a small July Special MAILBOox Pp CHILDREN USING OBSCENITIES Parents responsible for lack of respect white car speeding down the road with kids hanging out of it yelling some very filthy words. This disturbs me. When I see and hear all that is going on around us, and consider the children who come into this world, clean and innocent, I wonder what, as parents, we are doing to calmly accept these obscenities, the violence and the lack of respect that is so evident in society. Do we want everyone to talk this way fo one another? Is there to be no goodness in our communica- tion? Do ‘censorship’ rules have to mean that we must condone obscenities and swear words and taking God’s name in vain? I hope not. Name Withheld West Vancouver DRAPERIES BY S.
