EE mailbox Ex-mayor endorses Baker Dear Editor: I am writing as a non- elected, interested resident because of many requests I have had for comments on this Saturday’s elections in North Van District, par- ticularly the mayor's race. Because of its importance I offer the following personal thoughts: To be effective, the new District Mayor should have experience with the District “Council Manager” system of government, a_ current working knowledge of District problems and the residents’ concerns, live in this municipality, and have ~~the---ability- --to— responsible leadership to the new Council. There are four candidates for Mayor, only three of whom have had any ex- perience serving as a member of a municipal Council. Two of these candidates have been members of District Council, one presently still serving, and the other served in the 1960’s. The third candidate served on the City of North Vancouver Council, where he also still resides. This reduces to two the number of candidates who have the necessary “District” municipal experience and it is here that I offer my ‘Olson Murders’ authors Dear Editor: As the North Vancouver authors of the book, The Olson Murders, we are writing to clear up some of the issues muddied by your muddied columnist Bob Hunter in his Nov. 7 column. -Hunter says he hasn't and won't read the book and can’t understand why anybody would want to read or write about such a sorry topic. He says it bothers him “spiritually”. What really bothers us spiritually is how any self- respecting journalist can make any comment about any book, yet alone The Olson Murders, until he has read what’s in it. --. -Hunter-clearly is-ne-betier--—~- than the booksellers who also haven't read the book and whom he criticizes for banning it to mob”. Luckily, many Canadian critics have bothered to read the book and have been pleasantly surprised by it. These include such reviewers as William French, of the Globe and Mail, who believes the book should be ‘‘compulsory reading” for teenagers and mothers of teenagers and that banning the book is hypocritical. Since The Olson Murders “please the has already sold 30,000 copies, it's obvious many Canadians do not share Hunter's view that the best way to deal with a nasty subject is to bury one’s head in the sand. recent cross-country book tour that they too wanted a public inquiry into the case. -Many-of-them-told us-on-a--.. DELUXE ALUMINUM CANOPY answer ‘muddled ’ Hunter If Hunter reads The Olson Murders, he'll understand that the book raises some, key issues - in far more detail than the newspaper articles he may or may not have read to arrive at his own superficial conclusions. The book examines not only the way the Mounties handled the worst mass murder in Canadian history but also the way society can protect itself from mass murderers like Olson. Hunter will also learn, from the book’s portrayal of the enormous § suffering caused by this child killer, why there may be much to be gained from _ bringing back capital punishiment.— Jon Ferry Damian Inwood North Vancouver A9 - Wednesday, November 17, 1982 - North Shore News ‘‘Looking for an annuity? ?
