Both parents and teacher want to do the best they can for the child and have exclusive informa- tion which must be shared. Effec- tive communication requires good listening and talking skills. Personal anecdotes iluminate problems and can serve as ice breakers, but must not dominate Conclusions and definite action steps must be established. But remember neither teacher nor parents can correct major arcas of weakness with one action. Become an active partner in your child's learning plan. Offer to help, and empathize with the testraints teachers face duc to overcrowded classrooms and workload. Develop a list of questions which you can follow during the con- ference and refer to this list during the mecting. Conference Checklist: * confirm by phone the time for your meeting * make requests for others to at- tend if you feel it is necessary *prepare a list of your mediate concerns * prepare questions and them during the conference "approach the inceting as a friend, not an adversary ® ask teachers to explain any unfamiliar terms * identify specific activities to help solve problems im- use *ask for your child *conclude the conference by summarizing what you think has been said and what will be done * follow up. ways you can help Questions: Dos and Don'ts Do Ask: What does my child do best?
