Locals invent hair cape

A CHANCE dinner discussion and
an investment of less than $2,000
led June Brookes of North Van-
couver into the world of hair styi-
ing and salon equipment.

After a gripe session about how
horrible it is to have hair cuttings
finding their way down the back of
the neck and to other troublesome
spots, Brookes, 24, and sister-in-
Iaw Robyn Wyman, 28, came up
with a specially designed cape.

Using neoprene — the same ma-
terial used for scuba divers’ wet-
suits — the two crafted a cape with
a collar to fasten around the neck
to keep out stray hair. :

‘“*We have no experience in the

hair industry at all,”’ said Brookes.
“It was just a pet peeve and we
were teed off. It’s really a very
simple idea.’’

After a host of prototypes —
“the first were quite funny, we
didn’t end up with what we ex-
pected’? — the product was tested
and Cape Coupey was born.

So far the product has proved
“wildly successful,”” with salons
flooding the two and their newly
formed company with inquiries
about the new Cape Coupey.

looks at affiliation

NORTH VANCOUVER'’S Carmen School of Fashici: is looking into
becoming affiliated with the Eileen Ford Modelling Agency in the
U.S., says the school’s founder.

Other reports that the school is already affiliated with the agency,
the largest in the United States, were premature, said model Carmen
Espejo, 20.

“We are looking to buy a franchise to the (agency's) Super Model
of the World Pagaent so we can hold it in Vancouver. Then we will be
affiliated.**

The school's first SO graduates completed their courses at the end of
1987.
