IT IS a detective story of sorts, involving much field and archival research. The prize: West Vancouver’s vibrant heritage, identified and catalogued. By STEPHEN BARR News Reporter Inventory work began at the end of September, and now it is the public’s turn to help the West Vancouver Heritage Advisory Committee uncover those heritage treasures worthy of acknowl- edgement that may otherwise go unnoticed. As part cf the municipality’s 75th anniversary project of com- piling a heritage inventory, resi- dents are being asked to nominate buildings or other resources that they believe may be of special in- terest to the heritage inventory. From going around the municipality and searching out significant buildings, heritage con- sultant Foundation Group Designs has so far identified about 120 buildings, ‘‘and about 80 poten- tials,’ said consultant Don Lux- ton. But some buildings, which may not be architecturally significant, may have played a role in the municipality’s history and be eligi- ble for the inventory. ‘It’s very important in identify- ing things of historical importance to have discussions with the com- munity,’’ he explained. ‘‘Say if a (prominent) mayor or alderman lived there — that’s the kind of thing you have to get.” “We want as much input from the community as possible,”’ said West Vancouver social planner Richard Wagner, the staff repre- sentative to the committee. “‘(Buildings) may look insignifi- cant but be very important histori- cally.”’ Committee chairman Wally Beck said an inventory of this scope and quality is long overdue. “There are a lot of buildings and sites (whose) integrity has been threatened because we haven't identified (them as) our heritage.
