Author te read works

CANADIAN CHILDREN’S liter-
ature is to be the topic June 14
when award-winning children’s
author Christie Harris speaks and
reads works in West Vancouver.

“} do think that children’s liter-
ature helps children to understand
other people,’’ the author said in
an interview. ‘‘It clues them into
the world.”

Author of 19 books, Harris is
best known for her book Raven’s
Cry, a saga of three Haida chiefs
that is illustrated by well-known
Haida artist Bill Reid.

A CEC radio writer for 25 years,
Harris turned her pen to children’s
books in 1963 and is still at it, with
her twentieth book on its way to
her publisher.

“‘T was an old hand at writing at
that time,”’’ she recalls of her start
as a children’s writer. At that

children's writing,’’ said the
member of the Order of Canada.
“EP think the children’s writers in
Canada are very good.’

Appearing as one of a series of
authors speaking at the North
Shore Unitarian Church, Harris
will speak specifically on a writer
as a child's best friend.

Other planned authors include
radio storyteller Bill Richardson
and William Schermbrucker, a
noted Canadian author who has
written about South Africa.

present other Canadian writers and
poets,’’ event organizer Frances
Gray explained of other planned
authors’ readings.

Harris can be heard at the
