i8 - Suaday, February 15, 1987 - North Shore News CAN-DIVE Services of North Vancouver can do when it comes to assisting treasure hunters hauling up bounty from the murky deep. The deep-tech high-tech experts are currently assisting in a search under way for a barge located 380 fect beneath the waters of Gren- ville Channel, near Prince Rupert. The barge sank in 1952 while under tow from Alaska to Tacoma, Washington carrying 1,000 tonnes of lead and_ silver concentrate in sacks. “The search vessel is on site and they’re using something we cail ‘the flying eyeball’ and side-scan sonar,’ said Can-Dive Services president Phil Nuytten. The eyeball is Phantom Two, an underwater TV camera mounted in pressure proof housing and frame with thrusters and active scanning sonar, controlled from the surface. The eyeball sees accoustically as well as visually. Once the motherlode is located, Nuytten says the entire salvage operation can be done using the various automated recovery technologies and robot submersi- bles developed and fine tuned at Can-Dive. a STAFF MEMBERS at the Park Royal Hotel Tudor Room are walking around starry-eyed these days. For the ninth year the Park Royal Hotel has earned a four-star award from the Mobile Travel Guide, an American guidebook for vacationers and business travellers. The country inn, located along the bank of the Capilano River, received the award along with just 441 other four stars given by the guide to hotels, motels, resorts and restaurants in the United States and Canada. “We are both pleased and honored that the Park Royal Hotel Tudor Room has been chosen for the award, recognizing us for the efforts we have made to uphold the high standards required by the Seniors receive free income tax services CHARTERED Accountants will move from their offices into com- munity centres around the pro- vince in March to provide free in- come tax services once again to senior citizens. Those 65 years of age and older whose gross income does not ex- ceed $14,000 are eligible for the free service. “We have raised the income limit by $2,000 to serve more senior citizens,’’ said Eileen Pearkes, public relations officer and organizer of this year’s pro- gram. Seniors must call ahead, in mid-February, and make an ap- pointment at the centre in their area. Every senior who makes an appointment is assured that his or her return will be completed pro- fessionally — and free of charge. There is no drop-in service, so there are no lengthy lineups. Seniors are reminded that an ap- pointment is needed for each per- son. Couples, therefore, should make two consecutive appoint- ments. Sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia, clinics will be held dur- ing March at 35 locations in the Lower Mainland and 20 throughout the rest of the pro- vince. Seniors outside of the Lower Mainland should contact their local community centre or CA firm for information on the clinic in their area.
