Calder wins

top badminton
ranking

THE NORTH Shore’s Leslie
Calder is now ranked number one
in Western Canada’s under-16
girls’ badminton rankings follow-
ing a series of recent victories.

The Grade 11 Handsworth
Senior Secondary student repre-
sented B.C. in the Clarkson Cup
Inter-Provincial championships in
Saskatchewan over the Thanksgiv-
ing weekend and won the under-16
girls’ singles medal.

Following that victory, Calder
played in the Nanaimo Open
Senior Tournament on Oct. 19 and
walked away with the women’s
singles title,

Over the Nov. 1! weekend,
Calder played against competitors
from B.C., Yukon and Alberta in
the St. Georges Invitational and
won the Triple Crown in under- 16
competition. ‘

Calder has ambitions to be an
Olympic athlete.

Badminton, erroneously regard-
ed by many as a back yard sport,
has gained international recogni-
tion by its inclusion as a
demonstration sport in the 1988
Olympics in Korea and as a full
medal sport in the 1992 Olympics
in Spain.

Badminton is acknowledged to
be tougher aerobically than tennis,
squash or racquetball and is now a
compulsory curricular sport in
high schools throughout Canada, a
factor that has coniributed to its
recognition as the number two
participatory sport in Canada after
hockey.

There are six million badminton
players in England and the game is
the national sport in Malaysia, In-
donesia and India.
