SECOND LANGUAGE TV VALUABLE SERVICE French programming defended Dear Editor: Pam writing ir regard ro Doug Collins’ article ay a smokescreen for attacking not only the women's movement, foreign aid and the lack of federal funds to the West, Mr. Collins went on to brand the French-language TV and radio sta- tions as being irrelevant and, its with the others, a waste of time and money. Canada has a rich historical background which includes an af- ficially bilingual character and government, The further west one goes the less one of the languages is spoken, but that does not diminish the fact that the Cana- dian Constitution guarantees cer- tain bilingua! rights to ali citizens. I was born and raised in Van- couver but I have spent a signifi- cant antount of my own time and money fo be conversant in French for no other reason that | thought it would deepen my feelings of be- ing a Canadian, which it has done. Fortunately Po can maintain and improve my second linguage tarough French TV and radio. Not only a service to the many French Canadians chat five in B.C., the existence of the French media may influence others here in the west to investigate the culture and language of the French-Cana- dians, certainly it) can only strengthen our national unity and identity. That fact alone should justify the expense required. Doug Collins loves to provoke but often his criticisms are damag- ing and hurtful. His freedom of speech is entrenched in our laws, PERFORMANCE ALL SEASON TIRES P77 This brand new steel-beltec radial revotutionizes the con- cept of an all-weather tire.
