STUART Maddin of West Vancouver has won the Daryl Thompson Award, honoring a British Columbian who has made an outstanding contribu- tion to sport. He won the award at the Sport B.C. Athlete of the Year Awards banquet, held February 6. Maddin is a former vice- president of the Canadian Olympic Association, former president of the Canadian Amateur Swimm- ing Association and a former chairman of the Aquatic Federation of Canada. More than 700 people at- tended the banquet where “skiing sensation Gerry Sorensen was chosen senior and overall athlete of the year in 1981. All winners and finalists were chosen by a selection committee made up of members of the Lower Mainland media. West Vancouver gymnast Anita Botnen was a finalist for the junior athlete of the year award, which went to skier Diana Haight of Fruit- vale. . Shore skiers Hemlock winners THREE NORTH Shore residents finished in the running in the B.C. Freestyle skiing zone final at Hemlock Valley last weekend. The competition involved three events — moguls, ballet and aerials — in three divisions for men and one for women. Rob Carter of North Vancouver finished first among junior men, while Spar Street of West Van- couver was first in the in- termediate men _ category and Karen Anderson of North Vancouver came second among the women.
