A2-Wednesday, February 13, 1980 - North Shore News ca ~ mornings. This time was a great adventure, for Mary and I took the family. All six of us, the three, six, nine and eighteen year olds, disembarked at Honolulu two weeks ago, from an airline whose name I will kindly refrain from ever mentioning again. Our irritation melted away fast in the glorious warm moist tropical air of Honolulu airport. The kids were all eyes, for the palm trees and many other new things, and the eighteen year old boy and his father were all eyes for the wahines. Only a few minutes later we were in another aircraft, bound for Maui. When we landed at Kahului airport and rented a car my tribe was ecstatic. “Look at the mongoose!” “Gee, is it ever nice here!” “When can we go swimming?” The first half of our trip was business. We got a hotel room in Wailea, on the south west side of the island, with a balcony overlooking the sea. On our very first morning we ON FEBRUARY 18 VOTE NDP speckulations by Peter Speck. Watching the whales I must be the last North Shore resident to discover Maui. Each trip gets better, as the island becomes more familiar to me, and I can see why so many North Shore people head south in the winter. It sure beats fog, rain and cold dark ordered room service and a very enjoyable breakfast of papayas and croissants, out in the fresh Pacific air of the balcony. The sky was that in- credible Hawaiian sky, so blue. The clouds hung serenely poised in space like flat bottomed pillows, moving slowly with the trade winds, their shadows flowing almost imperceptibly over the slopes of the mountains below. A coconut palm nodded sérenely right next to us. After our breakfast I was packing up my briefcase for the meeting. The eighteen year old was standing on the balcony, adjusting his new straw hat in the reflection from the glass’ doors. Suddenly he shouted that he could see whales’ spouts mirrored in the glass. We all rushed to the balcony railing. A pod of humpbacks were cavorting not three hundred yards away. it was a most thrilling sight. They spent about fifteen minutes off the hotel, moving right in to the little bay. Huge animals, their full Jength -was sometimes visible as they rose to the surface of the clear blue water. They appeared to be feeding, and were moving about in all directions. The tail flukes of one cleared the water as it rolied on its side, and | would estimate the length of one side of the tail fluke at ten feet or more. Another, swimming directly toward us, dived slowly. I watched a bow wave build up over his bulk until we were looking at him through quite a bit of water. It reminded me of a film of a submarine submerging, and was indeed impressive. By the time the whales left there were many people Standing on the beach. Whale watching is quite a popular diversion on the island. I was pleased and thrilled to encounter the most strong expressions of affection for the leviathans, almost everywhere I went. The Hawaiians are proud of the whales, and the government protects them. The whales seem to know it, as we saw a great many that tnp. More about this in a future column.
