Corning Canada Inc. will

handles that can fall off
scalding the user, says
General manager Dick
Riley.

He said the publicity
campaign, to begin ap-

pearing in newspaper ad+
wertisements over the next
‘wo to three weeks, will
apply to 1.3 million coffee
makers manufactured in
Canada’ over the past 18
years.

Technically, he said, the
move is not considered a
recall but a voluntary plan
.based on corporate and
government negotiations.

The action was prompted
following consumer com-
plaints of being scalded
when the’ coffeemaker
handles separated from the
percolators. The percolator
defect was blamed on epoxy
glue failure which causes the
handle and metal band
assembly to separate without
warning from the’ white
glass-ceramic pot.

Riley said that in the last
18 years Corning Canada has
received only about 40
complaints ‘of personal
injury or property damage as
a result of percolators being
dropped. The U.S. parem

firm, Corning Glass Works,
of Corning, N.Y., said the
action - the biggest by a
single company in the six-
year history of the com-
mission - will be announced
Officially next week with the
start of a $2 million publicity
drive by the company.

“The personal tujury
claims could be anything
from a burned finger to a
bump on the toe, but all
complaints involving per-
sonal injury are treated very
seriously,” Riley said.

The potential handle
separation problem does not
affect Corning's Pyrex brand
clear percolators or apply to
any other Corning coffee
makers.

A similar, problem forced
Corning to recall 400,000 of

its Model E1210 cof-
feemakers in 1976. The
American government

levied a $325,000 fine on
Corning for failing to report
that defect.

He was not abie to
estimate how much =the
Canadian plan would cost
the company but said it
would be “extremely ¢x-
pensive”,

He said consumers will be
