Vu in North | Vancouver provincial court on Jan. 18, West Van changes architect advisory guideline WEST VANCOUVER'’S newest councillor, Alan Williams, took exception Monday to new terms of reference for the municipality's Advisory Design Panel (ADP). By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer _ The changes were drafted to accommodate Architectural Iristitute of B.C, (AIBC) wishes. i The ADP, which is largely made up of architects, studies designs referred to it by West Vancouver District Council. - Coun. Rod Day, who has been council's representative on the ADP, explained that the altered terms of reference are in deference to some of the AIBC's objections to ADP process, including the stip- ulation that appointees be West Vancouver citizens. The AIBC wants West Vancouver to choose ADP appointees from a list of registered architects. The terms of reference, accord- ingly. stipulate that the ADP should have five architects from this list —, with a preference for West Vancouverites. Williams tried to amend the altered terms of reference to stipu- late that appointees must cither “reside or do business” in West Vancouver. In answer to Coun. Day's con- cern that the AIBC might not then allow registered architects to serve at af! on the ADP as a result, Williams said that he “didn't care.” “Then we won't use architects at all,” said Williams. Acting Mayor Andy Danyliu also thought it preposterous “that a trade body would put itself above _an elected bady and dictate to then.” Williams’ amendment did not win cnough support, and the pro- posed terms of reference were passed. Coun/ Pat Boname voted against the terms of. reference, however, because she felt they “skirted the issuc” and did not suf. ficiently accommodate the AIBC.
