Deductible
to rise on
hit and runs

A RECENT change to the In-
Surance (Motor Vehicle) Act
means that some motorists with
property damage hit-and-run
claims will pay a larger share of
claims costs.

The deductible rises to $350
from $150 for hit-and-run dam-
ages sustained on or after Aug 1},
1993.

Basic Autoplan insurance nor-
mally covers the cost, minus the
deductible, of property damage
hit-and-run claims.

Motorists who also carry ICBC
collision coverage with a deducti-
ble lower than $350 will receive
re benefit of that lower deducti-

le. ;

Hit-and-run claims do not af-
fect a motorist’s position on
ICBC’s Claim-Raied Scale.

The $150 deductible has been in

effect since 1976, Its value has’

been diminished by inflation. The
increase brings the deductible in
line with today’s claim settlement
costs.

Over the past three years, ICBC
has paid out more than $61.8 mil-
lion for hit-and-run Property
damage claims.
