MORTH SHORE Branching Out,
a youth event planned for Aug. 21
at Ambleside Park, was approved
by West Vancouver District
Council on July 19.

‘Sponsored by the North Shore
Committee for Action for Preven-
tion ‘of Substance Abuse (CAP-
SA), the proposed multi-activity
event. was recommended for ap-
. Prova! by the West Vancouver
Parks and Recreation Advisory
Commission.

Coun, Diana Hutchinson noted
that Staff Sgt. Henry Indra of the
West Vancouver Police also
recommended approval on the
condition that the volume of the
“public address system be control-
led so that music generated would
be heard only in the immediate
vicinity.

A 78-YEAR-OLD West Van-
couver land dispute, believed to
be the oldest unresolved property
claim in B.C., was settled by the
B.C, Supreme Cuurt on July 15,

BC Rail has been granted clear
title 10 a 2.5-acre (1 hectare)
former right-of-way, now part of
the Gleneagles development plan.

The land dispute’s history dates
to 1915, when Charles Dalton ac-
quired a first mortgage on the
land. That same year, the owners

granted Pacific Great Eastern
Railway, BC Rail’s predecessor, a
right-of-way on the property.

At the time, Dalton owned most
af the Horseshoe Bay area. He
foreclosed on it and the
Gleneagles plots in 1917,

The last Supreme Court record
in the case dates to 1918, Dalton
later became Lieutenant Governor
of Prince Edward Island. He died
in office in 1933.

Meanwhile Dalton’s estate knew
nothing of the Gleneagles lands.

Van land dispute settled

Original company records and
mortgage papers vanished long
ago, “It wasn't until we advertised
in a P.E.1. paper that any of
Dalton’s descendants surfaced,’’
said Peter Roberts of West Van-
couver, lawyer for BC Rail,

Judge Ronald Raymond Holmes
tuled that Dalton’s mortgage
rights were extinguished. “BC
Rail is now free to reorganize,
develop or sell its property,’’ he
said,
