Actually, Lizzie Milward and Jesse ss, both 16, and their teacher Peter Scott, are likely not wearing their parkas around school. But they are in the midst of preparations for a cool-weather trip at the end of this year. When the clock ticks into the new millennium, the trio will be in) Antarctica, taking part in the Students on Ice Expedition. One hundred high school students from across Canada are travelling south for the two-week wip, from Dec. 27 to Jan. 8. Ross, who said she Joves being in the outdoors, is thrilled to be part of some- thing so exciting. “No students have ever had this chance before ... ever.” She and Milward both know the trip is not a vacation. The expedition staff will even include scientists conducting research projects in which the students can par- ticipate. “fs going to be a totally new environment,” — said Milward. “It's nothing like what we're used to.” The expedition is to take place during the Antaretic’s Austral summer, when the weather is best and when it becomes home to the greatest concentration of wildlife on earth. The surroundmy sea ice will have melted enough to allow the Marine Discovery entry into Antaretic waters abundant with of penguins, seals, seabirds anct whales. As well as on-board lectures and fearning, the students will also have eepportunities to make iandings along the coast in the ship’s fleet of inflatable boats, Finally, the students will discuss the political, environ- mental and ocean manage- ment issues facing Antarctica, and talk about possible solu- tiens and policy alternatives during an onboard student ed forum. Milward and Rass are par- ticipating in the expedition as students in Argyle’s new Environmental Studies pra- gram, run by Scott. Students in the program take 2) corg group of subjects, including chemistry, biology, social stud- ies and environmental man- agement, plus they are required to complete some work expericace. “The Antarctic is really the perfect laboratory. This is a great Opportunity for them to get the big picture,” said Scott. He is participating in the expedition as a teacher chaperone. “{ do feel a idle sorry for their parents,” he laughed. “Where do you take these guys for a holiday after they’ve been to the Amtraretic?” The trio were required to raise $8,900 each to partici- pate in the expedition and found help in the form of sponsors including the Antarctica Overseas Exchange Office, The Lego Company, Argyle Secondary School, Purdy’s Chocolates, and the Lynn Valley Veterinary Clinic.
