love AND basketball?

that the two just don’t jive. All
but Monica Wright (Sanaa
Lathan, in a breakthrough performance) who
can’t decide which she'd rather have more.

to Quiacy (Omar Epps) she loved
“ball.” Much to her mother’s
(Alfre Woodard) chagrin, Monica
won't be trading in her jersey for
an apron any time soon. No
makeup cr dresses, just scrapes
and Nikes for Monica.

Her ability to play earns
Quincy’s respect and the two
form a lifelong fricadship, rivalry
and love affair that
never strays far from

the court.

In high school, Quincy proves him-
self a big star, following in the NBA
footsteps of his father. His dad’s
pleas to have an education to fall
back on go unheeded by Quincy,
who just wants to play ball.

Meanwhile, Monica’s unlady-
like temper on and off the court
gets her into troubie and jeopar-
dizes her chances of being recruit-
ed for a coilege team. Her passion
for basketball is punctuated by
feelings for Quincy, who has more
girlfriends than three-pointers
under his belt.

Things heat up in the third
quarter. Monica and Q’s relation-
ship buckles under the pressure of
coaches, curfews and family trou-
bles. Q realizes that his philander-
ing father isn’t an ideal role
model, and Monica struggles to
find respect for her homemaker
mother.

For Quincy and Monica, life
revolves around the hoop, making
for a few interesting scenes: from
a game of strip one-on-one to a
play for one of life’s biggest deci-
sions.

The film shows the disparity -
between men’s basketball and
women’s basketball. While Q
basks in the glitz and glamour of
coliege ball, Monica’s team plays
in a crowded gym.

It’s refreshing to watch a film
tackle real life issues as well as the
sports fantasies of young playcrs.
It’s even more exciting to see the

female character harbour these same fantasies for
herself, rather than just cheering from the side-
lines.

First-time director Gina Prince-Blythewood’s
flawless style overcomes any dips in the plot.
Things are fairly predictable but the film is so
stylish and the performances so mesmerizing that
we don't care, That and Spike Lee’s seal of
approval (he produced) should draw substantial
crowds.
