Teacher sponsors: Jana Saruy and Mary Kay Fex Sine Sarah Mazzei, Emity Roberts, Charlie Christensen Contributing Writers FOR this article, we interviewed smokers, non- smokers, children and pub managers about the sub- ject of smoking. ¢ decided to write about the subject of smoking because we think it’s such a serious issue, and we would like to bring it to peo- ple’s attention. The type of questions we asked the kids were: “Would you ever smoke? WI hy or why noe” A student of Highlands schocl, Sarah Martinuk, age 11, said, “Heck no! Because [ don’t want to be ugly or have messed up teeth. I also don’t want to die at 29 of cancer!” Another student, 12-year-old Dana Tate, said, “No way! Because J don’t want to shorten my life!” Another student, Sarah Mazzei, age 11, said, “Of course not! I don’t want to smoke because it is revolting. It also makes you look older and I want to live a long and healthy life!” Most of the smokers we asked said they gor their first cigarette from a friend, they started smoking at a young age, and they stili smoke now. We interviewed some pub managers about the new no-smok- ing-in-public-places law and asked how it has affected their busi- ness. Out of seven pubs, four saw a decrease in business, pvo had an increase in business, and one stayed the same. The two where business has increased are very pleased because of the law. And the workers are happy and relieved too because they don’t have to breathe in the bad air. The two pubs with increased business are Maplewood Pub and Pemberton Station Pub. The one that stayed the same is Black Bear Pub. Sarah Mazzei, Emily Roberts, and Charlie Christensen, the three 11] year old girls who worked on this article, all agree about smoking. They think it is totally “uncool” and “disgusting” to smoke! They think that if the risks are so high and if you will end up obsessing over how to quite smuking, then why start? Smoking: no matter what anyone says, you don’t have to do it to be cool!
