The centres, said Bell, are clean, and allow people to _ rinse out cans and bottles at sinks. ‘Coun. Janice Harris, who voted in support of the bylaw along with Coun. Trevor Carolan, said at the mecting that the centres should be an integral part of a shopping area. Concerns about extra traf- fic and noise resulting from the centres, she said, are unfounded. . “Ft should be convenient to you. It’s part of your life that you go to Parkgate, you go shopping, you go to the library and you drop off your bottles. There’s not going to be a surfeit of traffic because you’re already there,” she said. “We've got to get a handle on NIMBYism (Not In My Backyard syndrome).” The rewards of a caring relation- ship can become lost in the frustration of misunderstanding. Now she can tell you something about every decade of its 60-vear history. Along with other members of the archives committee, including former board mem- ber Bette Rumble, Kindt, $0, has spent the past) three months organizing boxes of newspaper articles, pictures, annual reports, and docu- ments into dinders. For this weekend’s 60th anniversary bash, the commit- tee will be displaying that material to give visitors a sense of the long and rich history of the place Kindt calls “the gem of Lonsdale.” “There have been lots of times that I don’t know whar people would have done with- out Neighbourhood House,” she said. “I wonder how many people really know what a valuable they have here?” Now offering @ vast array of recreation and social pro- grams, from infant care to seniors’ peer counselling, Neighbourhood House began as a place where working par- ents could: entrust their chil- dren to Neighbourhood House caregivers. According to — Shirley Markides, the daughter of Neighbourhood Honse founders Rose and Hugh Beattic, it all began with a knock on the family’s door on a “wet, dark, miserable evening at about cight or nine o’clock.” Markides, who wrote a let- ne, 4iL CHANGE Simca 1978 LTD. Thev told her mother they had heard that many neighbour- hood children came there during the day, and asked if they could come in and dis- cuss it, “Dad was net home,” Markides wrote, “and Mom was really Jeery of asking, in strangers. But they were asked in. ... To me, thar was the beginning of North Shore Neighbourhood House.” She described how the group got hold of a con- demned three-storey tene- ment building, behind the post office on 2ad Street and Lonsdale Avenue. Neighbourhood — House moved several times over the years. It moved to its current location at 225 East 2nd St. in 1966. Markides’ parents and the three people who had shown up at their door fixed up the building, which had chronic Jeaks, no heat, no lights, and no running water. During the First World War, when young women worked in the shipyards, Rose Beattie and others cared for the children of the women shipyard workers. Throughout its history Neighbourhood House often broke new ground, offering programs or advocating for those in need. Teen programs were start- FUTON Pepe GE FACTORY FUTON chirance in fear lane ed in the °50s, when voung people with nothing to do were causing trouble. Sports, crafts, sociaf nights, and: sup- port for pregnant teens were some of the many programs offered for young people. The community centre often reached beyond its wails as well. During the °70s, North Vancouver City responded to pressure from Neighbourhcod House mem- bers to provide low-cost hous- ing. People from the House were aiso instrumental in a successful campaign to pre- serve a parcel of land in Lower Lonsdale, which became Waterfront Park. Kinde says Neighbourhood House made it easy for her to make friends and feel com- fortable in her new home on the North Shore. She joined the Golden Circle seniors group, participated in several bus trips, and spent many hours volunteering. This Saturday’s anniversary celebration will feature: music and entertainment on the gym stage beginning at 10:30 a.m.; floor demonstrations and dancing beginning at 10 a.m.; puppet shows and kids’ movies in the Little Theatre beginning at 10 a.m.; and a barbecue on the deck garden starting at noon.
