A culture where we see time as being more valuable to some than it once was, the result of which seems to have us continually looking for short cuts and quick fixes, This is evident in many areas of our lives and shows no sign of letting up anytime soon. Everyone is looking for something extra — a way to complement their hard work and give them the extra something that will help push them over the edge. It happens in business, as can be seen by all the how-to books on the market, and it is at least as prevalent in sport at ail levels of participa- tion, Some time ago I reviewed several so-called supplements that are marketed as poten- tial enhancers of athletic per- formance. | thought it might be interesting to again review afew of the products manu- facturers are trying to push your way while offering some straightforward comments on their value and efficacy. Sports Bars Pros: & They supply energy in the form of cake lories (so does chocolate and beer). & For optimum use consume them about one hour before _ your workout, @ Many are low in far and are therefore casily digested. Cons: @ Sports bars are not com- picte foods and should only be used as a dietary supple- ment. ; @ Overpriced! Other basic foods can do just as well, although aren’t always as practical. If you’re on a bud- get buy a Snickers.It offers good energy replacement value and to most people they taste a hell of a lor bet- ter. sidelines BASKETBALL... Sutherland Sabres’ boys took fourth and Argyle Pipers’ girls were sixth in their respective B.C. high school junior invitational bas- ketbal! tournaments. The Sabres opened with | wins over LV. Rogers (Nelson) 72-42 and Princess Margaret (Penticton) 51-44 in the 30th annual tourney in Vernon before being edged 63-60 by M.E.I. (Abbotsford) in the semis and settling for fourth after losing their last game 66-46 to top-seeded Vancouver College. Last year, as juveniles, the Sabres finished with a 39-2 record and grabbed North Shore and Vancouver & District championship hon- ours, As juniors this season, Sutherland again won North Shore and V & D bragging rights and finished 38-3 to boot. Argyle lost to Clarence Fulton (Vernon) 44-41 in their opener at the 17th annual junior girls’ tourney in Surrey, but rebounded to win the next three games against Parkland (Cranbrook) 49-36 and two Prince George schools, Kelly Road 45-34 and Lakewood 42-40 to finish sixth. Add one table- spoon of mentai toughness and half a cup of motivation. Top it off with a dash of character. Stir well and sim- mer over a long period of time. Cheers! Scoring seven of nine shots in the first round gave him a bye to the semis which he won with six successful attempts. The final went two extra sessions to break a tic. In total, he scored 28 of 45 for an outstanding 62.2% shooting average.
