BD Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Watchers Guide, Pocket Books, New York, 298 pages, $20.00. @ The Girl’s Got Bite, Renaissance Books, Los Angeles, 246 pages, $21.00. EVERY week over five million viewers tune in to the latest episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The audience is wide ranging bur foval. Type in Butfv on the Internet and sce page after page of Web sites scroll past. The show is not easy to categorize with it’s blend of teenage angst and gothic horror mixed with some great dialogue. I's a show for the nineties. Three books that attempt to reach that audience of loyal viewers are The Buff Chronicles, Buf fv the Vampire Slayer, the Watchers Guide and The Girl’s Ger Bite. The Buffy Chronicles, by N.E. Genge, is an unofficial companion to Bufft the Vampire Slayer. Inside it covers the episodes of the first two seasons in detail. Genge looks at the lore behind rhe various creatures and themes of the episodes, offering up interesting insights and playtul opin- ions. There is tots of Buffy trivia to challenge the devot- ed fans and info on the vari- ous actors involved in each episode. The end of each chapter finishes with Written on the Walla compilation of Butfy bloopers from that episode, only the true devotee would notice such things as Buffy’s St. Thomas Aquinas High Time Bingo 54] West Keith Rd, North Vancouver change of hairstyle within the same scene or the food change on the rable in the cafeteria from chips to a sandwich. Genge keeps the upbeat approach to the book trom start to finish and provides an entertaining accessory to regular viewing. Christopher Golden and Naney Holder have co-writ- ten Buffy the Vampire Slay The Watchers Guide. This book is the official version and as such includes more behind the scenes material, benefiting from full access to the actors, technical crew and the director. The b6ok includes much nore dialogue and excerpts from each episode of the first two seasons. As an accessory to an cle- ment of pop culture, the Buffy books fill in blanks and answer questions left over from watching the series. It opens with an extensive section examining the route the concept trav- elled from it’s original screenplay to feature movie and then three years later into television series.
