Danieis makes debut as acior at Aris Club @ Wang Dang Doodle by Leslie Milidiner, conceived by Denis Simpson, Jan. 13 to Feb. 6 (with previews Jan. 8-12) ac the Arts Club Theatre Granville Island Stage. Layne Christensen News aeporter layne@nsnews.com DEE Daniels has been hitting the boards as a singer for the better part of her life. But her appearance next week in Wang Dang Doodle will mark her debu: in an acting role. The musical comedy, which opens Jan. 13 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage is billed as a jump-jiving new Harlem musical set at a rent party in the Dirty Thirties. Daniels is cast in the dual roles of Minnie (a Josephine Baker-style diva) and God. Playing a diva is not much of a stretch for the singer who’s pertormed at jazz testi- vals around the world and shared the stage with jazz greats Lionel Hampton, Hank Jones and Herb Ellis. But God? Daniels says her cast mates aren't about to let her get too deeply immersed in her Saturday, 2:30-4:30 p.m. Black Bear Neigh Perpetrators play jazz in the lounge every bourhood Pub: Tivin — X, Mondays; Mz: Flood’s Party, Tuesdays. Howe Sound Inn: Jam sessions Thursday role. “They keep telling me: don’t let this God thing go to your head now,” says the singer, with a throaty laugh. Raised in Oakland, California, she sang her first solo with the church choir at nine. She's been a staple of the Pacific Northwest jazz scene since the °70s. Since last year, she’s lived in Sunshine Falls on Indian Arm, just a 12-minute drive from Deep Cove and “a great place to come home co” when not on tour: Daniels wraps her impressive four-octave vocal range around a number of solos in the show, including one gospel-inspired num- ber, You Gotta Do Right, she penned for her scene as Ged. As the diva Minnie, she’s required to display some fancy footwork — and that’s where the challenge lies, she says. “People assume that just because you sing and you move around on stage a bit that it’s no problem for you to do some serious dance steps here,” says Daniels, who’s polishing her moves in the final week of rehearsals. Arts Club publicist Lin Bennett says there’s no need for Daniels to worry about her theatrical debut. “She's got great pres- ence,” says Bennett, and she’s not just talk- ing about Daniels’ stature (an imposing six- feet tall). “She can get down and shake it.” Tickets for Wang Dang Doodle can be reserved at 687-1644. concerts » Pp Centennial Theatre: Vancouver Svinphony with Clyde Mitchell conducting and Nicolo .
