26 — Wednesday, May 12, 1999 — North Shore News Rescue van fund boosted NV City donates to Search and Rescue vehicle THE fundraising efforts of the North Shore Search and Rescue team received a welcome boost May 4 when North Vancouver City donated a cheque for $26,000 for a new mobile command vehi- cle. The command vehicle, which will replace an older rescue vehicle, will allow the team fo respond more quickly to emergency call-outs In the mountains. The rescue group needs to raise an estimated $362,000 to $375,000 for the vehicle. The vehicle, 20 feet in length, will have its own power generators, a mulkti- band communizations system, map table and two radio oper- ator consoles. Tim Jones, team leader of North Shore Search and Rescue (NSR) spends 40-50 hours a week tending to administrative duties — many which relate to fundraising. “Too much volunteer time is put into fundraising versus training,” Joncs said. Jones said that afl organi- zations associated with the outdoors — tourism, outdoor retailers and manufacturers — need to contribute financially to meet the training and equipment needs of the rescue team. The command vehicle fundraising project has been ongoing for three years in an effort to raise funds from the local community. Jones estimates the group is $40,000 short of its goal. The NSR receives some funding from the North and West Vancouver Emergency Program but is heavily depen- dent on contributions from corporations and individuals. Jones is lobbying the provin- cial government to help fund the search and rescue teams’ capital equipment budgets. The NSR still has several 15-month term deposit ‘Minimum Deposit: $1,006 fundraising projects in the works and their team facilities have just come online enabling more coordinated communication in times of rescue.
