West Van scouting enters seventh

Work underway to document history

A group of West
Vancouverites is asking for-
mer scout troop members to
be prepared to clean out their
attic.

“We're writing the history of
scouting in West Vancouver,” reports
Bill Dickinson. “And I think it will be
a thick volume.”

Dickinson, Jean Goodman and
others are undertaking the rather
daunting task of documenting West
Van's long scouting history, which
began 70 years ago this September.

Scouts Canada counts over
248,000 boys, girls and adults among
its current membership, and continues
to be one of the most popular youth-
oriented organizations in the world.

The first West Van scout troop — a
cub pack — started in 1927 under the
leadership of Vernon Lester.
Dickinson was an eight-year-old in
that pack in *28 at St. Stephen's
Church, and still counts among his
friends members of that troop. The
first scout troop began when the cub
pack graduated to the scouting ranks.

But Dickinson says he doesn’: con-
sider Lester the “father” of West
Vancouver scouting.

“A fellow by the name of Vernon
Fagan had a cub pack going a little
earlier than 1927," — explains
Dickinson. “But he wasn’t well spon-
sored and they didn’t go through the
registration process (with Scouts
Canada) so really, the second cub pack
was in face the first.”

Confusing, as that is, there’s no
confusing the fact that scouting had a
positive influence on thousands of
West Vancouver youngsters over that
seven decade period. Indeed, it con-
tinues to do so today.

“We think a lot of people have
memorabilia stacked away in. their
attics and basements, and we're hop-
ing that they will contact us and let us
look over the material.”

But he admits, “?’m puzzled just
how we're going to handle this pro-
ject, we've really just got started.”

Dickinson has some leads with
regards tu where to begin ccllecting
material, and he’s asking anybody who
has memorabilia — or just memories
— from their- West Vancouver scout-
ing days to contact him at 922-8625,

art show and silent auction
on Sunday, March 23, from
noon to 4 p.m., at West
Vancouver Community
Centre, 780 22nd St.

Artists are invited to sub-
mit up to five paintings or
sketches to be displayed and
sold by silent auction.

Art students attending
secondary schools on the
North Shore will be invited
to exhibit their paintings in a
separate area, with a limit of
five paintings per school.

The show is expected to
generate great interest in the
work of up ta 100 local
artists.

The net proceeds from
the sale of the art will go to
the Optimist Club for com-
munity projects.

Artists are requested to
register for this event by
Friday, March 14.
Registration forms can be
picked up at West Vancouver
Community Centre.
