Although this hotel no longer exists it is not forgotten thanks to early photographers such as. George Nye (the uncle of Mollie Nye). - _The .owner and proprictor of the Hotel North Vancouver was _ Pete Larson, a well-known figure in the early days. He owned many pieces of prop- erty throughout the North Shore, including the Canyon View Hotel, builtin 1909. on the Capilano River, Larson Elementary School . and Larson Road were both nam- edinhisreemory. . . According to the local newspa- per of the day, for a quarter of a century the Hotel North Van- HORTH SHORE HERITAGE — by Dorothy Foster couver was closely linked with “all the major happenings ‘con- mected’ with the progress and de- velopment of the city.”” The hotel became known for its annual Dominion Day celebrations in and about the grounds. People came from all over the Lower Mainland to see the spec- tacular fireworks display on the waterfont, south of the hotel. Important athletic events were staged in front of the hotel on Esplanade, and the ‘summer months were popular for balloon rides on the grounds. Beach access, and boats and launches, were provided for horel guests, and a livery offering single riding horses or teams was also operated on the grounds. Daily rates for these hotel guests were $2 and up. This hotel had several buildings in its complex. One of these outer buildings, The Pavilion (located where Pepita’s restaurant now stands), was used for political mectings, boxing tournaments, and dances. Another building on the south side of Esplanade connected with the hotel and held municipal council meetings for some years, previous to the incorporation of: the City of North Vancouver.
