Mould: ‘Punk rack means there
are no reles. At least that’s what it
meant when it started. It may have
set out to destroy certain types of
music or set out to be some sort of
sociological statement, but at the
end of the day the music just
meant vou could do whatever the
f... you wanted, That's pretty
much where we sit with it
musically.

you already writing music?

attitude has stuck for new
musicians coming up now?
Mouid: “| think there’s a real
substructure of music and artists
who have never subscribed to the
corporate rule book. And ! don’t
think that’s ever going to change. |
think we go through phases where
those people are heard more often
and heard less often.”

Music Now: I was wondering if
you see the thriving indepen-
dent music scene in Canada

and the U.S. as a5 an indica-
tion ef chat musical substruc-
ture being heard more?

Mouid: ‘Yeah. | think there are a
lot of people who just don’t want
te work inside of that system
because it’s just too restrictive and
you owe too many peopie too
many favors.”’

Music Now: is that a part of
what took you to Rykodisc zs

Mould: ‘Yes. After working with
Warner Bros. and Virgin for a
number of years | found that it’s
not the way that | work the best. |

like quite a bit. They say what you
were doing really made a dif-
ference to me when | was younger
or made a difference to me last
year when | heard it for the first
time, or whatever.

Music Now: Can you drop

some names?

Mould: ‘‘Oh, Pixies, My Bloody
Valentine, two bands who i
respect quite a bit. That's the en-
couraging part, knowing that you
might have made an impact on
other people’s work. Their work
makes an impact on me now. It's
nice to have friends. In regards to
the whole “*pedestalization’’ of it,

| really can’t be bothered when
i've got a sound check at 5
o'clock.”

Music Now: To close off, do:
you have any advice for a
young fan of yours who might
want to get into the music
business?

Mould: “Take a look at what
everybody is doing. Decide that
none of it is appealing and go off
and do what you want. Take a
look at everything that’s working
and then avoid it.”
