ENVIRONMENT Off the beaten trac TRUDGING UP the 3rd Street hill on my way to the recycling program office on my first car-free day, I reflected on the benefits to be reaped from the pursuit of clean air. The most obvious one at that point was nothing to do with the reduction of pollutants, bui reduction of a different sort in the area of my calves, which were at that moment screaming with agony. . They weren't the only ones screaming when I reached the top of the interminable hilf and discovered that 1 had conquered not the 3rd Street hill as | had supposed, but the Keith Road hill, and that I was still rather a long way from my intended destina- tion. . It wasn’t the first time I'd mix- ed up the two parallel routes in my head. Except when you're hoofing it, somehow it matters mose than when you're driving a car. I must say, however, that despite the climb 1 enjoyed my walk. I had been dropped off by my mate at the North Shore Winter Club and was walking to the North Shore Recycling Pro- gram just off Lonsdale on East 2nd Street. It was Environment Week, and my first day without my trusty, rusty Honda, which has been put Peggy Trendell-Whittaker ECOINF9 on blocks after, proving itself far too expensive and environment- unfriendly, The brisk walk took me about 35 minutes, and | felt good about getting a decent work-out in as part of my commute. And I also appreciated a number of things that 1 wouldn’t have if 1 was driving the same route in my car. I enjoyed the contact with the other walkers I encountered and taking stock of the different architectural styles in the neighborhoods [ visited. In fact, in the 15 days since that first commute without my vehicle, I haven't missed having a car at all. I am, however, in a fortunate situation that makes alternative transportation relatively easy. First of all, I have a partner who is able to take the SeaBus to work if I desperately need to bor- row his wheels. I haven’t needed them yet during the daytime, but we vse his car for weekend recre- ation trips and time of major grocery purciiase. Second, I live only a short walk from shopping and the library. I also have a sister up the hill who came to my rescue last week to drive my computer to the emergency clinic after it had become unconscious just before a book deadline I was working on. And third, my work is home- based and doesn't require as much commuting as other jobs. So, you may scoff, where is the challenge in giving up your auto under these idyllic circumstances? The challenge is- largely psychological. Whether you use your car a lot or a little, the act of actually selling it and relying on your own two feet requires a ma- jor leap of faith. 1 believe that for most people, See GVRD page 26 | ALL DESIGNER CLOTHING Education Funding Review Call for Written Submissions An independent Education Funding Review Panel was announced June 3 by the Honourable Anita Hagen, Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism and Human Rights.
