Although it is not a seniors’ cen- tre, 611 -—- or 73 per cent -- of Neighbourhood House’s 839 members are seniors. Although Neighbourhood House is not a recreation centre, it does act as 2 venue for the North Van- couver Recreation Coinmissioa. What Neighbourhood House is, is a flexible centre where a seniors’ frogram has eventually evolved but which opsrates side-by-side with a host of other community services and programs not ac- counted for in membership numbe:s. “I would describe it as a com- munity centre for all ages from: naught to 100,” said Elizabeth Milligan, the seniors’ home visitor. Executive director Don Ruther- ford said the seniors’ program is both new and old. “We're really beginning to carve out a separate seniors’ department and that’s been in the last ten years.”* But Neighbourhood House of- fered senior-oriented programs as early as 1941, Program worker Verska Anand and Milligan divide the seniors’ program between them. Milligan visits shut-ins and thos: with disabilities who have _re- quested a visit.
