Drinking driver lucky to be alive

OPEN LETTER TO AN _ IM-
PAIRED DRIVER

I’m the one who reported you to
the police.

Driving down the highway, I
noticed that you were having prob-
lems keeping your car on the road.
Naive as I am, I thought you were
having mechanical problems. After
all, it was only late afternoon.

As you made a valiant attempt
to take the 15th Street exit off the
highway, your car careered to the
right, barely making the off ramp.

Then the alarm bells went off in
my head, ‘This guy is drunk!’’

As calmly as possible I yelled at
my child to pick up the car phone
and dial the operator, who im-
mediately put me through to the
police dispatcher.

Meanwhile, you'd bounced your
car off a traffic island and your
head was bobbing and weaving all
over the place. The police dispat-
cher tried to calm me down as |
raced to keep up with you, so that
I could get your licence plate
number,

You now picked up speed and
went through a four-way stop,
hors honking at you. People in
their cars were shocked, but you
were oblivious to it all.

You cleared that intersection
without hitting anyone, but
another four-way stop was coming
up. Dispatch now assured me the
police were on the way. I screamed

into the phone that they had to
hurry before you killed someone.

Then came the next intersection
and you decided to turn right —
CRASH. You just bounced
yourself off a car that was pulling
away from your right. Thank
goodness you hit the front of the
car instead of the driver’s door.

Finally you stopped on the side
of the road and I directed the
police via car phone to your loca-
tion.

I wasn’t there to witness you be-
ing taken away to the police sta-
tion or you being fingerprinted.

Hopefully, you did some soul
searching the next day when reality
hit, but if you laughed it off, you
are in serious trouble.

void so all the damage to the car
you hit and to your own car will
