17 - Wednesday, March 16, 19%8 - Narth Shore News SPORTS ASWC HOCKEY Fiames THE NORTH Shore Winter Club Flames bounced back froma humiliating opening game loss to White Rock in stunning style, tur- ning back the Whalers 8-6 at White Rock March 31 and then slamming them 10-4 at home the following night to take a 2-1 lead in their West Coast Junior Hockey League playoff clash. The series will continue with the fourth game at White Rock March 18 and then return to the Winter Club March 19 for a fifth and deciding game if necessary. The game March 1! was as suspenseful as the March 12 match was lopsided,. with the outcome undecided fight to the end. it was also a game in which the power play almost proved the Flames’ undoing as the locals were burned by three short-handed Whaler goals in the first two periods. . After the Whalers opened the scoring with a short-handed goal 7:25 into the game, the Flames got the equalizer at the 15:57 mark with Kevin Bubr scoring from Ray Stonehouse. Just over a minute later the Flames added a power-play goal by. Dave Port from Stonehouse and Kelly Lawrence to lead 2-1 after one. The second period was only 40 seconds old when the North Shore team struck with the first of two geals — Port scoring with the man advantage from Ken Savage and Stonehouse and then Dan Payne adding an unassisted marker at 5:56 for a 4-1 lead.
