Doug Collins @ get this straight ® WE WEEPING prophets who have been preaching in the wilderness about immigration have often felt lonely, but now a poll has been taken that shows that three out of four Canadians disapprove of current policies and want them put on hold. This news didn’t make the fron pages, which it would have done if it had been something about women’s rights, the sad plight of the country’s pansies, or how we should chase more 90-yeur-old war criminals. But it's there and won't go away. The poll was taken by Gailup and has little to do with the phony refugee scandal. It concerns the whole spectrum of immigration and was financed by a group of ordinary citizens who see this country going down the drain if present immigration patterns are continued. Here are some of the results, to the nearest percentage point: Seventy per cent of Canadians believe that immigration should not be allowed to change the country’s ethnic and cultural makeup , and 76 per cent have the parallel belief that immigration should not exceed Canada’s ‘‘ab- sorptive capacity’’, meaning the number who can come in without leading to racial and social tensions. Seventy-nine per cent want no more amnesty nonsense under which cheats, liars, con artists, sly-boys and border-dodgers are told that al! is forgiven and forgotten, and of course they can stay in jolly old Wimpltand. The same proportion believes that the immigration intake should be related to the needs of the workforce, and 80 per cent say that uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces of people already here should be obliged to apply on their own merits and not come in simply because they have relatives in Canada. (About 50 per cent of all immigrants get in under our in- sane ‘‘family reunification’’ pro- gram, which is geared to the demands of Asiatics, etc.) An impressive 94 per cent are of the opinion that no one should be allowed in who has not been cleared for all aspects of health, and criminal and subversive behavior. (Recently, an immigra- tion officer was fired for disclos- ing that the politicians are permilt- ting known criminals to come in. And immigrants are not tested for AIDS.) Seventy-nine per cent say they should be consulted on immigra- tion policies and that decisions should not be left entirely to ever- active axe-grinders like the ethnic groups, churches and other pro- fessional do-gooders. That would imply the taking of referendums, of course, of which the politicians have a horror. They are anxious to save the whales, but not the white Canadian. There was one contradictory result in the poll: 61 per cent are in MEDICAL ASSOCIATION MEETING Street safety debated RECOMMENDATIONS COVERING mandatory bicycle helmets, reinstitution of gov- ernment-run motor vehicle testing and banning skateboards on B.C. streets and highways will be debated at the B.C. Medical Association’s Annual Meeting, Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 in Victoria. The increase in cyclist injury and death prompted the call from the association’s Athletics and Recre- ation Committee for mandatory helmet legislation. “Each year in B.C., approx- imately 20 people are killed in cycl- ing accidents. Cyclists are more likely to receive fatal head injuries than any other class of road user, including motorcyclists,’’ says committee chairman Pr. Bill Mackie. Concern over mounting accident statistics and the need for better monitoring of vehicle condition is behind the association’s Emergen- cy Medical Services Committce’s reconimendation for bringing back mandatory motor vehicle testing stations. That skateboards same committee wants banned from streets and highways, and municipalities given sufficient authority through bylaws to enforce such a ban. If passed by the BCMA's General Assembly and ratified by the association’s board of directors Oct. 3, these recommendations become BCMA policy. But chat may only in- dicate that a lot of people may still be confusing multiculturalism with the French, English and other European cultures. What is plain, in any case, is that they don’t want this country to become a suburb of Calcutta, Hong Kong, Jamestown and Peking. The poll’s sponsors state: “This sends a clear message. Canadians are extremely concern- ed about immigration policy and want an immigration system designed for Canada and Cana- dian interests... “Demographic projections reveal that if the flow of im- Migrants...continues in its present form, with a very large proportion of immigrants coming from the Third World, by early in the next century English and = French- speaking Canadians will become minorities in their own Jand.”” Sorry if I feel a bit smug about this, but what have } been telling you?
