Two charged for growing pot THREE North Vancouver men appeared in North Vancouver pro- vincial court Monday to face charges of cultivating marijuana. Robert Jobn Ivings, 33, and Douglas William Hewer, 34, were in court to face one churge of possession of marijuana for the pur- pose of trafficking and cultivating marijuana in connection with a Sept. 23 seizure by the RCMP drug squad. In a separate case, James Roger Petty, 24, also of North Van- couver, appeared in court to face charges of cultivating marijuana and possession of cannabis in connection with a Sept. 28 drug squad seizure. Appearing before Judge J.D. Layton, Ivings was remanded to Feb. 5, 1987 for a preiiminary hearing. Charges against Hewer were dropped. Petty was remanded to Novy. 24 to fix a date for trial. Sex assaulter gets 90 days A 43-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced to 90 days in jai! Friday after he was found guilty in B.C. Supreme Court of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old prostitute. James Vincent Forbes was originally charged with sexual assault and unlawful confinement in connection with an April 20, 1985 in- cident in which he picked up the prostitute in Vancouver's West End and took her to his home in North Vancouver. In addition to the jail sentence, Forbes was placed on probation for three years. No verdict was recorded on Forbes’ charge. Forbes, a grain handler ter the past 25 years, will serve his sentence on weekends. unlawful confinement Man guilty of assault / : A 36-YEAR-OLD Vancouver man was fined $750 Monday in North Vancouver provincial court after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault. Bradley David Birss was originally. charged with assault in con- nection with a July 16 incident in which he assaulted a female. ‘He was subsequently charged with threatening to injure follow- ing a July 26 incident in which he was alleged to have threatened to “get a gun and shoot you ail,”* In addition to pleading guilty to the assault charge, Birss admit- ted making the July 26 threat. Birss was also placed on probation for a year and ordered to keep the peace over the same period. Mian charged with stealing car AFTER A North Vancouver RCMP member observed a vehicle driving in an erratic manner, he made an attempt to stop the driver. Police said a short, three-block pursuit took place, with the driver losing control and fleeing on foot last Wednesday around 3 am, The area was cordoned off, and the man was found to have stolen the vehicle. NV city criticizes Canada Post ‘NORTH VANCOUVER Cit) Council recently endorsed a reso- lution criticizing Canada Post Corporation for not providing door-to-door mail service to newly developed areas. A letter frou: the city council in Kitchener, Ont. cited the cost-cut- ting ‘‘new direction’’ of using community mail boxes for tesidents in ntwly developed areas, rather than the conventional delivery service provided to other homes. “City council acknowledges that Canada Post is attempting to reduce its annual deficit; however, it strongly suggests that there are other alternatives open...rather than a method which is purely discriminatory," the letter said. North Van City will notify Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Canada Post acting president D.H. Lander that it has endorsed Kitchener's resolution. The letter was sent to all Cana- dian municipalities of more than 25,000 people.
