Volunteering adds experience YOUTH VOLUNTEERS who at- tended So You Want to Volunteer information sessions on June 23 and 24 were able to find out about several volunteer opportunities on the North Shore this summer. About 20 students, ranging from ages 13 to 18 heard from repre- sentatives of various recreation, daycare, and handicapped pro- grams. Students were able to find a position which suited their skills and interests, and the agencies benefitted by recruiting invaluable summer volunteers. As Marilyn McClaren, youth coordinator at the North Shore In- formation and Volunteer Centre (NSIVC), which sponsored these sessions stated, ‘‘Most of these programs, ranging from day camps for the handicapped to semi- wilderness outings, would be unable to run without the help of their volunteers.”’ Volunteer centre representatives stressed the benefits of volun- teering as job experience, skill development, and the satisfaction of community input. Each agency told about letters of reference which note assessment of strengths, and recognition certifi- cates that their volunteers would receive. Students who want to find out more about volunteer oppor- tunities can call the NSIVC at 985-7138.
