LIVING SCULPTURE E Sweets for treats PAGE 27 Train hedges toward Expo IF YOU SEE a green 1912 puffer belly steam train chugging its way up Grand Boulevard, don’t worry, you’re not losing your buttons — it’s just tin Sg is Peete Ot Guy Carscadden’s topiary. Complete with wheels, ties, track, a topiary train crossing sign and even dry ice steam coming out of the smoke stack, the holly bush in the shape of a train is the North Vancouver man’s tribute to the 100th year of the Canadian Pacific transcontinental train service and Expo 86. Topiaries are a 17th cen- tury art form of trimming and cutting plant material into living sculptures, ex- plains Carscadden. The train is Carscadden’s three-year project that stands 14 feet high and 20 feet long in his front yard. Carscadden, owner and operator of Manscapes Ex- terior Environmenta? Land- scaping, says his train is designed as a community drive-by, that can be enjoyed by all. And enjoy people have. The topiary, which requires trimming every two weeks, recently won an award of By ROSS MEEK merit from the B.C. Nursery Trade Association. Carscadden says his steam engine is unique to Canada. The only other topiary train he knows of is‘in Disneyland, California. In Canada, the art is limited by climate primarily to the Lower Mainland and Van- couver Island. The dedicated gardener hopes to re-enact the poun- ding of the last spike, com- plete with a gold spray painted spike, on November 7, (the day the Canadian Pacific reached B.C.) as part of the anniversary spirit. While Carscadden enjoys creating his topiaries (he has several other topiaries in his back yard), he also creates them for a living, selling birds, rabbits, seals and other figures for his clients. The topiary can be viewed at 1004 Grand Boulevard. : NEWS photo Terry Peters ning topiary train, The intricately shaped holly bush took three years of bi-weekly trimming and cutting to create.
