SB ON MY TWO most recent trips to Britain I’ve deliberately covered far too much. The reason’is simple - both times 1 was guiding a family member who hadn't been before and might not get another opportunity for a while, In my daughter’s case, | wanted the visit to be primarily educational, especially since. she’d just completed Grade 12 English, History and Literature. | don’t think any parent will believe “how little today’s kids : actually know about these subjects until they take them overseas! _ ~ We. started with five days in London, continued on ‘to York for two days and then on to Edinburgh. From there we went to Glasgow enroute .. to. Blackpool’ (guess whose idea that was).and Liverpool © (same idea). Then we visited Wales for five days, making far too many: stops to really appreciate the.¢ country. As if that wasn’t enough, we then ‘rushed over to Weymouth, caught the ferry for Jersey and did a three- day tour there. Finally, we took a two-day breather in Bournemouth, before rushing for Heathrow and home. 1 am’. not* recommending this route.. * One advantage’ of. . travell- ing with a’kid is.that you see the country in a different perspective... If you tried to keep a place for yourself in front of the main gate it was hopeless and unpleas- sant. Just now, repairs are being done to the Victoria. § monument (the: Wedding Cake) in front of the palace. This used ‘to be a good spot for watching but the public isn *t allowed near it now. : We found that the crowds. the far -& didn’t gather on right-hand side of the palace (as you face the gates). We found ourselves a spot there and by stepping up on the fence had a decent end-zone view, Give it a try. Don’t try to get a cab § from anywhere around the palace after the ceremony. Pedestrians block the roads so badly that the cabs cost you double in just waiting time. *The Thames cruise we took went from the Westminister dock to the Tower. This killed two birds as we wanted to spend the time at the Tower later. The cruise costs one pound thirty each and gives you a great view of Tower Bridge. ®The Tower (more about this later) Sunday afternoon is a lousy time to visit! The gates open at 2 p.m. and the lineup to get in goes for blocks. I sent my daughter to buy the tickets, not realiz- ing that if she followed the ‘rules she. might be back by dark. This is on Tooley St., just the other side of Tower Bridge and, if you decide to visit it, save time by combin- ing it with the Tower. They’re not suitable for older ones either. Suzy summed it up - “Yuk!” It costs three pounds fifty to get in, too. The best way to get back to central London from here is to take a bus from just in front, go over Tower Bridge and then transfer to the Underground. Next day, we got the chance of a lifetime - two tickets to ‘‘Cats’’ - probably the most memorable thing we did the whole trip. Marvellous! More about that next column.
