This has pulled investment money out of stocks and into interest- interest rates. It’s also of interest that if interest rates go up _ this creates the potential for a capital gain as the price of the money paying vehicles, such as shares rise. In simple terms, they are preferred shares whose divi- dend yield is tied to the bank prime rate, floating up and down with it. Some invest- ment brokers look upon it as an alternative to short-term deposits and its basic appeal is to investors who are seek- ing income. Keith MacDougall of McLeod Young Weir drew my attention to the floating rate preferreds and their re- interesting. According to my information, they were first issued some years ago by the Toronto-Dominion Bank and Seco-Cemp Litd., a holding company of the Bronfman family (they of the whisky wealth who over the years have spread their investments into many other enterprises and fields of endeavour.) This year a batch of new issues has appeared. Their re-surfacing is not surprising. (Brascan and London Life), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Mercantile Bank. Scotia Bank and Trilon issued their shares with a par value of $25 and the dividend is 70 per cent of the prime rate. Par value of the Commerce preferreds was $100-one-half of prime plus an adjustment factor. The Mercantile issue is at- tractive, offering a couple of what we might call ‘‘perks.’’* It pays 73 per cent of the prime rate and adds a guarantee that it will never _pay less than 8% per cent (although many would agree that it will be a long time before the bank prime rate sees 11% per cent again, if keep in mind is that the floating rate preferreds pro- vide a dividend that qualifies for the DIVIDEND TAX CREDIT; hence the pre-tax yield presently is something like 14 per cent and that’s very competitive with current what | want, but Pil know when I see it?)
