A7 - Wednesday, June 6, 1984 - North Shore News EB mailbox [><] Speak out about NV SPCA Dear Editor: Several weeks ago, | wrote to The North Shore News ex- pressing my thoughts on the way the North Vancouver Shelter of the S.P.C.A. ap- peared to me after a visit which | made on Good Fri- day. With the exception of one letter which was most critical of my attitude, many letters have since appeared in the ‘Mailbox’, the majority of which have been most supportive. N.Van SPCA excuses ‘flagrant’ Dear Editor: In regard to NV SPCA’s various explanations of the fate of Sammy James’s dog -- the most ludicrously unbelievable one is that they couldn’t hold dogs for all the people who say they will return with the money. Just how many times does this happen ina day? The obvious solution is to simply take the name and address of the owner and give him a deadline. Is that too much to ask of a society that is supposed to advocate responsibility, compassion and humane treatment of pets? If this ever happened to me, | would not hesitate to take the matter to court. ] hope something can be done about this flagrant ot responsibihty on the part of the NV SPCA wos only the tip of the iceberg! T. Yada North Vancouver 4) BC. Hydro Lynn Valley lots, District 7200 sq tt Flutus Ave In the Sunday, May 27 edt- tion, Mrs. J. Dawson glso wrote the ‘Mailbox’ in equal distress over the conditions of the Shelter and the animals which inhabit same. Mrs. Dawson expressed a desire to form a committee which would work independently for the improvement of the Shelter and I would very much like to contact her (or vice versa) with a view to ac- complishing the formation of such a committee. To everyone who took the time to write in support of my Original letter, and indeed, to those who did not have the time to write but are in sym- pathy with the plight of these animals, | would appreciate hearing from you at 980-6147 any evening after 6:00 or on weekends. To speak out against the conditions of the Shelter is one thing, but to do something about it is another altogether. I firmly believe there are enough people in North Vancouver who would care enough to become in- volved in order to effect the changes which are not only desirable, but absolutely essential. This is not an insurmoun- table task; only one which re- quires a great amount of car- ing and a lot of hard work, with a little organization thrown in for good luck. Joy A. Gilmore North Vancouver ICBC knocked unfairly Dear Editor: I find it interesting that no matter how much things change, they always remain the same. The article in your May 23, 1984 edition concer- ning the problems being ex- preienced by Mr. Tisdale with the Insurance Corpora- tion of British Columbia is one of those things which hasn't changed. Just over a decade ago you would have run the same arti- cle only the defendent would have been some foreign dominated, money-grubbing, private enterprise insurance company. It was popular at that time to denigrate in- surance companies and their high handed practices. 1.C.B.C. was formed fo political reasons by th government of the day with the promise of stopping all o, the terrible practices of tHe private insurance companies. The people of B.C. got what they wanted. Only how they don’t like that which they wanted. Mr. Tisdale is not unique with his problem. Many other people have experienc- ed the same situation. It is common knowledge that when we got 1.C.B.C. we lost the Principle of Indemnity as it related to the automobile. Your car is worth just whatever is printed in the price guide used by banks, etc. and no more. Yet there is a way to pre- vent the problem, and always has been. 1.C.B.C. agents have a form known as an APV 152 Appraisal Form which someone with a vehicle Tisdale’s can such as Mr. 1 Venetian draperies by S. Laursen Custom Draperies. Bedspreads Vertical and Wooden Blinds have completed by a qualified appraiser, and when submitted to 1.C.B.C. with a completed Application for a Valued Policy, (1.C.B.C. form APV_ 153) and accepted by them, pro- vides the owner with a valued form of insurance. If the vehicle is subsequently damaged there can be no question of the value. If people do not take ad- vantage of the optional coverages available to them they are the author of their own misfortune. It is unfair to knock I.C.B.C. for that. If they are unaware of the op- tions available to them perhaps they should look to where they obtained their Autoplan insurance. Douglas A.
