THE BRIGHTEST artificial
hight source in the world is
the Vortek Lamp, invented
and developed in British Col-
umbia. It is brighter than the
sun, so it has many potential
uses where work must be car-
ried out at night.

Last year, the Vortek
Lamp won tIndustrial
Research and Development
magazine’s IR-100 Award,
recognizing it as one of the
100 most significant
technological advances of the
year. In a recent demonstra-

tion of its power, this past
January, a single Vortek
lamp lit several hectares of
the Expo 86 site to the west of
the Cambie Street bridge.
This spring, an all-weather
version of the Vortek Lamp
has been undergoing field

trials at Beaver Cove on Van-
couver Island. There the
100,000 watt lamp, mounted
in the back of a truck, has
been iluminating the Cana-
dian Forest Products’ log-
sorting area. The site enables
a comparison between the

costs and efficiency of

lamp with a standard array of
mercury vapor lamps already
in place.
