NO EEE clection 33 Et Indians lose vote, chief charges JUST UNDER two thirds of the entire Burrard reserve have allegedly been left off the voters list and that has both Chief Richard George and North Vancouver- Seymour NDP candidate David Schreck furious with the provincial government. Forty-five of the 72 eligible voters on the Burrard reserve along the Dollarton Highway in North Candidates demand end to mining on Gambier HOWE SOUND islands must be preserved in an unspoiled state, declared John Reynolds, Socred candidate for West Vancouver-Howe Sound, in a statement issued Monday. And his NDP opponent agrees. He praised the four-year old efforts of the Save Howe Sound Society and _ the Gambier Island Preservation Society in “defending this priceless natural legacy.” “The threat of an open pit mine must be_ forever removed; three-quarters of Gambier Island has been staked -- including all the Crown Land which is 2/3 of the island. This Crown land must be returned to public recreation and wildlife use” Reynolds insisted. He promised he will press the provincial government to act to resolve the matter as soon as possible. “The economic valye of Howe Sound to B.C.’s_ growing tourist industry and general economy far outweighs any potential return from pit mining on Gambier,” Reynolds said. Reynolds expressed further concern for the protection of the Squamish estuary through careful consideraton of develop ment and locaton of the industrial and = loading facilities planned for ex pansion there “The coexistence of sensitive habitat arcas for birds, fish and wildlife with essential human economic activities is, however. possible auf sound scientific principles are accepted and apphed with vigilant care © he said Claus Spickermann, NDP candidate inp West Van Howe Sound. also called last week for the prohibition of open pit mang on Gamincr Island “This incredible coavironment adjacent to the urban arcas of the natural dirce Hy Lower Mainland makes Vancouver umique in the world and tt must be preserved ~ he said Classified 986-6222 Credit Vancouver were not on the voter's list, says Chief George. “Both my counsellors, Steven and Gerald Thomas, and myself want to protest this injustice,” Chief George said. “We only found out about this foul-up on Tuesday night, a day before the deadhne and because of a funeral of a prominent Squamish Band member, we just didn't have much time to do anything about it.” “We want to vote in the upcoming election and many of our band members will find it very difficult to cast Section 80 votes,” George said. Chief George was given a copy of the voters list by Schreck following a meeting between the candidate and the band council on Tuesday evening, a day before the deadline for voter registration. “I was shocked when I found out that there were so many voters on the reserve left off the list,” Schreck said. “The Indian people have a lot at stake in the outcome of this provincial election .... they are very upset with the Social Credit position taken Chief at the recent constitutional conference on aboriginal rights and now many of them will have a very difficult time expressing that displeasure at the ballot box.” Schreck said that many people in the riding of North Vancouver Seymour were left off the list, not just the Burrard Reserve, but the great percentage was “certainly” on the reserve. Chief George is personally supporting Schreck in the campaign. He says Schreck’s position on the aboriginal rights’ question would en- sure that the native people will be dealt with fairly.
