WHEN THE ARMY CADET movement was
started in Canada back in 1862, its founding
fathers probably hadn't envisioned that it would
grow to become one of the largest youth
organizations in the country. Currently some
22,780 young Canadian men and women are
reaping the benefits of friendship, citizenship,
excellent training and summer programs that

Army Cadets has to offer.

The North Shore’s Army
Cadet Corps can trace its
roots back to the early 1900s
when the 6th Field Com-
pany, Canadian Engineers of
North Vancouver first intro-
duced a cadet program as
part of its organization. In
those days it was the Militia
Unit’s obligation to staff,
train and provide uniforms
for the young cadets.

After many years the 6th
Field Company found it

could no longer keep its
Cadet Corps in operation,
and the Corps became little
more than a fond memory.
That is when Captain
Derrick Humphries (now
Mayor Humphries of West
Vancouver) stepped in and
gave the Corps a new lease
on life. On January 25, 1956,
he reformed the Corps under
the new guidelines and 200
young people turned up to
